Everyday Stuff(s)
“Quit trying to find beautiful objects to photograph. Find the ordinary objects so you can transform it by photographing it.”
- Morley Baer
I saw this quote attached to a photography challenge - take 10 photographs of random things in your house. And I thought - hey that is a cool idea, I am going to try that! It was a really yucky day that day that had me stuck in the house - so I decided I would find my 10 favorite items in our home and make them feel as special as they are to me. I decided that I wouldn't think hard on that list and just go with what my gut popped into my head.
It was a harder than I thought! Coming up with my list was easy - it was deciding how I wanted to depict each object that is so seemingly...ordinary. Anyways, here is my list;
Number 10: Handwritten Thank Yous
In today's world of computers and all that jazz - it is rare that you receive something handcrafted. I have tried very hard to keep all the handwritten notes, especially from my students over the years.
Number 9: Pencil Crayons
I love to colour - and I love to organize my colours, by colour, in crazy miss-matched mugs.
Number 8: The Chair
Cody and I found this beauty at a night market in Kensignton one night. Made by a local artists Bri Snyder of Illdebri .
Number 7: Book of Winter Readings
This is was my favorite university class, taught by my favorite professor; Max Foran. It was an eclectic class, an we covered everything from mutiny at Fort Calgary to the CEF attack on the RNWMP barracks in Calgary.
Number 6: Grandfather Clock
The grandfather clock that made the journey across the pond with my mother's side of the family. Its beautiful, it is elegant and it is a testament to time.
Number 5: The Soul of the Camera, David duChemin
This book was a gift - and I read the entire book on the plane ride from Calgary to New York. I could not put it down. It is an understatement to say that it changed how I view my own photos and how I go about creating an image.
Number 4: Teddy
Cody had this teddy made at Build A Bear - he had two hearts put in it. Teddy lived with me while Cody and I lived thousands of miles apart. Her nose is worn, her ribbons faded - but her two hearts are full.
Number 3: Books - in General
Books are integral to who I am - I love to read, and will always find the time.
Number 2: Les Misérables
This books sits atop my mountain of favorite books. It is challenging, it is disturbing, it is a love story. The below image captures one of my favorite chapters in the book; Slang.
Slang is nothing more nor less than a changing room where language, having some dirty deed to do, disguises itself. It puts on word-masks and rag metaphors.
- Victor Hugo
Number 1: Stone Bracelet
Mom gave me this years ago. I love it, I love how the silver shows it age, winking slowly in the light. I love how the stones; polished to perfection - never once look the same.
