Kinbane

Lisa smiled. 'You know how sometimes, you catch the faintest hint of movement in the corner of your eye, then you blink and it's gone? That's them.

- Jennifer McMahon, Don’t Breathe a Word

Perched on a rocky outcropping, surrounded by waves crashing against the shore, the cry of gulls and the song of the wind - Kinbane stands proud and resolute against time.  Relatively less known - Kinbane enjoys less popularity than many of the castles along the Coastal Route in Northern Ireland. The trailhead begins at the base of an extremely narrow, twisty and leap of faith road - a road which no tour bus could hope to maneuver. We arrived to a small parking lot, with a handful of cars keeping one another company.

As we started down the cliffs, Kinbane came slowly into view. It was everything and more. Kinbane, is my favorite castle from our time in Ireland. It was magic, it was craggy, it was a place where if you closed your eyes and imagined - you could see the elves and the fairies dancing. And if you looked carefully out of the corner of your eye - you could see fading footprints in the soft moss and a slight swirl of soft movement.

Kinbane is a wild, unkept soul - my kind of place.
